Account-based marketing (ABM) has long been associated with large companies and their well-staffed marketing teams. Yet the principle—focusing your efforts on a few high-potential accounts rather than prospecting broadly—is accessible to SMEs. Here’s what ABM is and how an SME can implement it.

ABM vs. traditional prospecting: the difference

ABM doesn’t replace broad prospecting: it complements it. A lead generation at scale (in French) fuels volume, while ABM focuses on strategic accounts.

Why ABM is relevant for an SME

An SME often has limited sales resources. Wasting them on accounts that will never sign is costly. ABM flips the logic: you invest time where the likelihood of closing—and the value of the contract—is highest.

ABM method in 4 steps for an SME

Step 1 — Select the accounts

Based on your ICP (in French), identify a short list of high-potential accounts: estimated contract value, likelihood of closing, and access to decision-makers.

Step 2 — Map the decision-makers

For each account, identify the people involved in the decision. In B2B, multiple stakeholders carry weight: you need to understand their roles and their respective priorities.

Step 3 — Personalize the message

Create a specific angle for each account, based on its current situation, known challenges, and the value you bring. An ABM message doesn’t look like a mass message.

Step 4 — Coordinate the channels

Combine LinkedIn, email, and phone to reach the right decision-makers at the right time, with a consistent storyline across channels.

ABM is a methodology formalized by the Information Technology Services Marketing Association (ITSMA) in the 2000s. This article presents the general principles adapted for SMEs, without citing market statistics.

Frequently asked questions

Is ABM only for high-value contracts?
ABM is more profitable when the value of a contract justifies the personalization effort. For low-value contracts, broad prospecting is more effective.
How many accounts should an SME target with ABM?
At most a few dozen, often fewer. ABM works through depth of attention, not volume.
Do you need expensive tools to do ABM?
No. An SME can start with a spreadsheet, LinkedIn, and a CRM. Dedicated tools amplify the effort, but they’re not a prerequisite.
