LinkedIn messages that convert: structure and real examples
· LinkedIn · 5 min
LinkedIn is flooded with bad prospecting messages. “I’m reaching out because your profile caught my attention” — that’s the message everyone receives and nobody reads. Here’s the structure that sets apart the messages that generate replies from those that end up in the trash.
1. Length: less than 150 words, ideally 80
High-performing LinkedIn messages are short. Why? Because your prospects read them on mobile while scrolling their feed, between meetings. A long message looks like a sales pitch — and immediately triggers resistance. A short, targeted message feels like a real human outreach.
2. A 3-part structure
Part 1 — Context (1 sentence): why you’re contacting them now, with a specific angle. No generous compliment. Example: “I noticed you just opened your office in Lyon.” Part 2 — Value proposition (1–2 sentences): what you do, for whom, and with what result. Example: “We help sales teams like yours double the volume of qualified meetings via LinkedIn.” Part 3 — CTA (1 sentence, closed question): “Does it make sense to discuss this for 15 minutes sometime this week?”
3. Personalization that changes everything
The first line must be 100% personalized. Sources of inspiration: a recent post from your prospect, a company update, a recent job change, an article they shared, a mutual recommendation. This line shows you didn’t copy-paste the same message to 500 people — and that signal is exactly what makes the difference.
4. Mistakes that kill your reply rate
Mistake 1: pitching immediately in the connection message. Mistake 2: using empty phrases (“I’m sure we could find synergies”). Mistake 3: forgetting the CTA — a message without a clear question won’t generate replies. Mistake 4: sending identical messages at scale without personalization — people spot it right away.
A good LinkedIn message doesn’t look like a prospecting message. It looks like an email a friend would send you if they thought your service could help. Short, targeted, relevant, with a real personalized first line and a simple CTA. Test this format for 30 days — the results will speak for themselves.
