Prospecting by sector: the vertical method
· Prospecting & Strategy · 5 min
Prospecting across every sector dilutes expertise: each call starts from zero. Focusing on one sector, by contrast, builds knowledge and makes messages more relevant. But locking yourself in has limits too. Here is the vertical method.
The advantage of depth
In a sector you know well, every message becomes more relevant: you know the issues, the vocabulary, the typical cases. The prospect feels you speak their trade, not a generic pitch. That credibility speeds up the conversation and improves conversion.
This depth relies on a well-defined ICP (in French) for each sector - without it the vertical stays blurry and the advantage disappears.
Do not lock yourself in
A sector can become saturated or turn around. Chain verticals instead of depending on a single one: each sector you master becomes a reusable asset. Temporary specialization builds expertise; rotation protects against the risk of dependence.
- How long should you spend on each sector?
- A few weeks to a few months, depending on the size of the market. The goal is to build enough knowledge to speak with relevance, then capitalize by continuing or pivot.
- Do you need one message per sector?
- Yes, adapted to the sector's issues and vocabulary. A generic message applied to everyone cancels the advantage of the vertical approach and sounds false to prospects.
The vertical approach concentrates expertise; rotation protects against risk. At Mooniz, we prospect by sector with a method. Discover our services →
