Trigger events: the signals that trigger buying

Trigger events: company signals (funding, hiring, product launch) that trigger prospecting

Prospecting at the wrong time is prospecting for nothing. A trigger event is a signal that makes a prospect receptive to your offer: a new problem, a budget that opens up, a priority that shifts. Here are the signals to watch.

The most powerful trigger events

A funding round frees up budget and demands growth. Mass hiring signals expansion. A new executive (CEO, VP Sales) puts contracts back in play. A product launch creates a need for tools or services. A geographic expansion opens accounts. Each one is an entry point.

These signals combine with intent data to prioritise the hottest accounts.

How to detect them

Watch announcements (LinkedIn, trade press), job postings (a sign of expansion), filed accounts and job changes on LinkedIn. Sales intelligence tools can automate this monitoring. The goal is to reach out within weeks of the signal, not six months later.

Mentioning the trigger in your message

A message that opens on the trigger ("congratulations on your funding round") shows you did your homework and builds a connection. Do not do it if you have nothing relevant to offer: the trigger is only useful if it justifies your approach.

Are all trigger events equal?
No. A funding round or a new VP Sales says more than a simple website change. Prioritise the signals that point to a budget or a reshuffle of contracts.
Should trigger detection be automated?
Yes for volume: sales intelligence tools flag triggers quickly. Stay manual for the message, which must be specific to the trigger detected.
