How to prepare a cold call that holds up in 10 minutes
· Cold-Call · 5 min
Most SDRs make their calls with no preparation, hoping the script will be enough. That's a mistake. 10 minutes of prep per prospect can double your meeting-booking rate — because a prepared call sounds like a conversation, not a recited script. Here's the exact process we use at Mooniz.
1. The minimum to know about your prospect (3 minutes)
Before calling, check these 4 items in under 3 minutes: (1) The prospect's exact LinkedIn title — make sure they're actually a decision-maker or influencer on your problem. (2) Company size and industry — to contextualize your opener. (3) Any recent company news if available (funding round, hiring, new office). (4) Whether you have clients in the same sector — a sector reference instantly credibility-boosts your approach.
2. Craft a tailored opener (2 minutes)
From the info you gathered, personalize your standard opener. "Hi [First name], I work with several [type of company in their sector] on [specific problem]. I saw you're [title], so I imagine [likely pain point] is an issue for you — is that right?" This opener shows you've done your homework, which instantly credibility-boosts your call.
3. Prepare 3 answers to likely objections (3 minutes)
Depending on your sector and ICP, certain objections come up systematically. Note the 3 most frequent ones and write your response before dialing. Having the answer ready lets you stay calm and respond with confidence — without the awkward silence that signals improvisation.
4. Define your goal and your exit line
Clearly define the call's goal before making it: (1) Primary goal: book a meeting. (2) Fallback goal: get a callback date or permission to send an email. Never hang up without one of the two. Also prepare your exit line for when the person is genuinely rushed: "No worries, I'll send you 2 lines by email and we revisit next week?"
Cold-call prep isn't a guarantee of success — but it's the difference between a call that sounds like a robocall and one that sounds like a real conversation. Ten minutes per prospect, applied systematically, transforms your conversion rate over the medium term.
