Freelance SDR or prospecting agency: which to choose?
· Growth · 5 min
A freelance SDR and a prospecting agency meet the same need, generating qualified meetings, but not in the same way. Here are the differences that matter when choosing.
The freelance SDR: what it brings, what it requires
A freelancer is close to an in-house team member: they know your offer, talk to you directly and adapt quickly. In return, continuity depends on one person: leave, illness or departure stops prospecting. You often provide the tools, data and management, and quality varies widely from one profile to another. The cost can look low, but it does not always include these items.
The agency: what it brings, what it requires
An agency mobilizes a team, a method, tools and result tracking. Prospecting continues if a caller is absent, and volume is easier to adjust. In return, you are further from each person calling, and quality depends on the brief and the review points you organize. Commitment terms vary from one agency to another and should be checked before signing.
Criteria for choosing
Four criteria usually decide. Volume: one caller or a team. Management: do you have time to run a freelancer alone? Continuity: can you accept an interruption? Tools and data: are they provided or at your expense? For a short test on a specific market, a freelancer may be enough; for regular, high-volume prospecting, an agency is often easier to sustain.
To prepare calls, whichever you choose, see preparing a cold call effectively.
Questions to ask in both cases
What concrete B2B prospecting experience on a comparable target? How is the script built and validated with you? Which indicators are shared and how often? Who replaces whom, and how quickly, in case of absence? What are the commitment and notice period? No freelancer or agency can guarantee a number of meetings: a promised figure is a warning sign.
- Is a freelance SDR cheaper than an agency?
- Not necessarily for the same scope: compare what is included (tools, data, management, replacement) and the cost of a meeting held, not the headline rate.
- Can you combine a freelancer and an agency?
- Yes, for example a freelancer on a specific segment and an agency on volume, as long as targets are coordinated so the same prospects are not contacted twice.
