Checking your data before prospecting
· Data · 5 min
Launching a campaign on an unchecked list means betting on emails that bounce, job titles that no longer exist and companies that were wrongly identified. The cost does not show right away, but you pay for it in deliverability and credibility. Here is how to check before you send.
The three basic checks
The email must be valid and reachable, the job title must match the role you target, and the company must exist and fit your target. If any one of the three is off, the approach is wasted. These checks are partly automatic and partly done by eye on a sample.
The natural decay of data, or B2B data decay, explains why a list left alone rots quickly - which is why checking at the moment you send matters.
Test before scaling up
Send to a small sample first and watch: bounce rate, replies, unsubscribes. If bounces go above a threshold, stop and fix before continuing. This discipline protects your sender reputation, which rebuilds slowly once it is damaged.
- What bounce rate is acceptable?
- Keep it very low. Beyond a small percentage, the list needs cleaning. A high rate alerts spam filters and hurts your future deliverability.
- Do you need to check everything manually?
- No, automate the technical validation of emails and cross-check job titles against a source. Keep manual checks for a sample and for strategic accounts.
